When someone searches for your charity on Google, they see two things before they ever visit your website: your page title, and a short paragraph of text beneath it. That paragraph is your meta description - and it's one of the most underused tools in charity digital marketing.

What Exactly is a Meta Description?

A meta description is a short HTML element that summarises what a page is about. It sits in your page's code (in the <head> section) and isn't visible on the page itself - but Google picks it up and often displays it in search results.

Directly - no. Google has confirmed that meta descriptions are not a ranking factor. Your position in search results is determined by other things: content quality, backlinks, technical SEO, page speed, and more.

But indirectly - yes, significantly. A well-written meta description improves your click-through rate (the percentage of people who see your result and click it).
